Dabawenyos got a chance to see the Miss Earth Beauties who are competing for a chance to be crowned Miss Earth 2016 after the Beauties and the Miss Earth team made a brief stop in Davao City a couple of days ago on October 13th, 2016.

The contestants were presented to the public in front of the City Hall of Davao and were welcomed by City Administrator lawyer Zuleika Lopez, and other city officials. After interacting with the crowd and posing for group photos, the Miss Earth team and Beauties proceeded to the SP building where they were greeted with another warm welcome by members of the 18th City Council.

The City Government prepared for the event ahead of time in coordination with Task Force Davao and Davao City Police personnel so that their experience would not only be memorable, but safe as well. Elements of the Philippine Navy and Philippine Coast Guard were deployed for sea safety.

After touring Davao City and holding a breast cancer awareness event at Waterfront Insular Hotel, the Miss Earth 2016 team and their delegates traveled to and around tourist spots in the Island Garden City of Samal. The region does not yet have a bridge linking Davao City to Samal Island but a plan to build one is underway.

The Miss Earth Beauties are competing to become the official spokesperson for Miss Earth Foundation, the United Nations Environmental Programme, and other environmental organizations. As it stands now, Miss Earth is the 3rd largest beauty pageant in the world (next to Miss Universe & Miss World).

It is important to keep in mind that beauty pageants like this are full of vested interests. The sponsors and the organizations that the delegates are competing to speak for will always choose the contestant that represents the pageant’s core values.

The key is to determine if the “core values” of the contestants are actually being practiced by everyone involved and if they match the interests of the common Filipino citizen. That is a question that we must ask whenever someone speaks about changing the Philippines, the world or any country on Earth.

I am just another man from the United States married to an amazing woman. I met her online in 2009 and flew to the Philippines that same year to marry her. Then after visiting her family in the province, we settled down in Davao City and got married on my 25th birthday.
